"Why", a sculpture by Richard Hunt, is installed outside of UChicago's Smart Museum beside the University police parking lot. While browsing archival photos, I discovered that "Why" was originally installed in 1974 on the paving stones at the center of the Harper quad. Below are some pictures showing the shift. The first photo is apf2-07292 from the Archival Photographic Files of the Special Collections Research Center at the University of Chicago Library. The second photo is reproduced from "African American art and artists" by Samella S. Lewis. I took the picture of "Why" in front of the Smart Museum myself in May 2011.
