Blizzard 2011 video

The blizzard of February 2, 2011 dumped over twenty inches of snow on Chicago. In order to record the progress of this storm, I wrote a script to capture images from labcam1, a webcam on the roof of the Kersten Physics Teaching Center that looks east down 57th Street. Images were captured every minute between 3:38 PM CST on Tuesday, February 1 and 5:03 PM CST on Wednesday, February 2. Download the archive of all 1,526 images. The movie above shows these images at 24 frames per second. The wind was so strong Tuesday night that there was almost no accumulation on the roof; Wednesday morning (around 40 seconds in) the wind slows and there is heavy accumulation in a short time. Around 0:50 the snow develops some interesting wind sculpture.
